Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tax bracket?
A tax bracket is a range of income taxed at a specific rate. The US uses a progressive system, so only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate โ not your entire income.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate applied to the last dollar you earned (the highest bracket you reach). Your effective rate is the average rate across all your income โ always lower than your marginal rate.
What are the 2025 federal tax brackets for single filers?
10% on income up to $11,925; 12% on $11,925โ$48,475; 22% on $48,475โ$103,350; 24% on $103,350โ$197,300; 32% on $197,300โ$250,525; 35% on $250,525โ$626,350; 37% on income above $626,350.
Does getting a raise push all my income into a higher bracket?
No. Only the portion of your income that falls within the higher bracket is taxed at the higher rate. Income below that threshold continues to be taxed at the lower rates.
Are tax brackets the same for married couples?
No. Married Filing Jointly brackets are roughly double the single brackets, which can reduce the "marriage penalty." Married Filing Separately uses the same thresholds as single filers.
