How Australian GST Works
GST is a broad-based 10% tax on most goods, services, and other items sold in Australia. Businesses registered for GST collect it on behalf of the ATO and can claim credits for GST paid on business purchases.
Formula
Adding GST: Gross = Net Γ 1.1
Removing GST: Net = Gross / 1.1 (or: GST = Gross / 11)
Removing GST: Net = Gross / 1.1 (or: GST = Gross / 11)
Example
Invoice for A$2,500 (ex GST):
GST = $2,500 Γ 10% = $250
Total = $2,500 + $250 = A$2,750
Receipt shows A$330 inc GST β what is the GST?
GST = $330 / 11 = A$30
Net = $330 - $30 = A$300
GST = $2,500 Γ 10% = $250
Total = $2,500 + $250 = A$2,750
Receipt shows A$330 inc GST β what is the GST?
GST = $330 / 11 = A$30
Net = $330 - $30 = A$300

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Australia's GST rate?
Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate is 10%. It applies to most goods and services sold in Australia. It is administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
What is the GST registration threshold?
Businesses with a GST turnover of $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profits) must register for GST. Ride-share drivers and taxi operators must register regardless of turnover.
What goods are GST-free?
Basic foods (most unprocessed food), medical services and equipment, childcare, education courses, exports, and some financial services are GST-free (zero-rated).
How do I add GST to a price?
To add GST: multiply the net price by 1.1. For example, $100 + GST = $100 Γ 1.1 = $110. The GST amount is $10.
How do I remove GST from a price?
To find the GST component in a GST-inclusive price: divide by 11. For example, $110 GST-inclusive Γ· 11 = $10 GST. Net price = $110 - $10 = $100.
